Back from Thailand
Tuesday, December 30th, 2003Akemi and I have just returned from our trip to Koh Phuket, Thailand. We had an awsome time there! The above picture shows islands in the Andaman Sea. One of them is called James Bond Island, because parts of The Man with the Golden Gun were shot there.
Weird: The hotel’s surveillance cameras could be received on the room’s TV…

The Meatrix
Saturday, December 20th, 2003
The Meatrix is a Flash movie on factory farming. Cute and funny, but also scary. Do they actually chop off chickens’ beaks? Apparently so, according to this site. I didn’t know that…

Tuesday, December 16th, 2003Excel Being “Helpful”
Tuesday, December 16th, 2003Try this: Launch Microsoft Excel 2000. Enter a few letters, each into its own cell:
In case of the letter “i”, when you hit Enter, Excel changes it to a capital letter:
Why does Excel do this? We don’t know. When you go back to the cell and enter “i”, Excel will change it to “I” again. I guess Excel simply knows better what’s good for you. And you have to admit, capital letters are much better that small letters. But only in the case of “i”, that is. For other letters, Excel lets you get away with small letters.

spam.la
Monday, December 15th, 2003spam.la is a nifty free service offered by DreamHost.com. It is a simple way to create throw-away e-mail addresses, for example for website registrations. Here is how it works:
- Use whatever@spam.la if a sign-up form forces you to enter a valid address.
- Any mails sent to whatever@spam.la are shown on the spam.la website.
- Read the confirmation mail there and get any registration codes sent by the sign-up form.
- Forget about the e-mail address and any spam that might be sent to it in the future.
Welcome to My Weblog
Monday, December 15th, 2003I’ve decided to run this blog on Movable Type because
- The software seems mature and has many features and plug-ins.
- It was easy to install.
- The permalinks and archive URLs don’t contain MT specific stuff, so I might be able to change to a different software at some point in the future without breaking any links.
- It’s written in Perl, so I can run it on my web hosting provider’s server.
Another strong candidate was Roller.
