Cell Phone Usability

Monday, September 27th, 2004

My cell phone interrupts my call with a loud beep because the battery is empty. Oh well, I think, it’s my own fault for not charging it in time. I hang up and go searching for the nearest landline phone to continue the call with my friend. But what’s her number? The number is stored in my cell phone, but the little miracle of usability insists that it’s completely empty and won’t even allow my to access the phone book. It has enough energy left to display a bright, cheerful “empty” graphic, though…

Why didn’t the phone alert me five minutes earlier with enough juice left to access my important data? You’d think that cell phones have been around long enough for designers to know and avoid such obvious mistakes.

Oh well, at least I have my blog. I might feel all weak and victimized without this great way of improving the world by bitching and whining about it!

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) rips off Doraemon (friendly cat-robot from the 22nd century); anime-geeks indignant.
